This is a model of shinden-zukuri architecture, which was a predominant style in Japan during the Heian period. According to my half-Japanese roommate, Kyoto still has some of this architecture, but most of them are now just tourist spots.
Once you understand what shitomido, tainoyo, moya, hisashi, misu, etc. are, you get to appreciate its loveliness. :3
